SecLists.Org Security Mailing List Archive

Any hacker will tell you that the latest news and exploits are not found on any web site—not even Insecure.Org. No, the cutting edge in security research is and will continue to be the full disclosure mailing lists such as Bugtraq. Here we provide web archives and RSS feeds (now including message extracts), updated in real-time, for many of our favorite lists. Bug Fix for SMB Version Formatting in Nmap 7.93+ Yam Mesicka (Apr 11)
Hi Nmap Developers,

I've identified a bug in Nmap in Nmap 7.93 and 7.94 related to inconsistent
formatting of SMB versions detected by Nmap's SMB scripts.

The issue:

* Nmap 7.94 outputs "3:1:1"
* Nmap 7.93 outputs "311"
* Expected format (as in Nmap 7.92) is "3.1.1"

This inconsistency can cause problems for scripts that rely on accurate SMB
version information. To address this, I've:

* Opened an...

Misconception about how pcap_getevent() is meant to be used Jan Danielsson (Mar 10)
Hello,

When browsing/reading about pcap_getevent(), I got the impression
that its intended use was roughly this (pseudo-code):

----------
cap = open_device(..);
hev = pcap_getevent(cap);

while(1) {
// block and wait for data to become available for reading
dw = WaitForMultipleObjects([hev]);
if(dw == FIRST_INDEX) {
// Enter a loop that calls pcap_next() until the buffer is empty
}
}

I.e. pcap_getevent()...

Npcap Celebrates its 10th Anniversary In Space! Gordon Fyodor Lyon (Oct 05)
Dear Nmap community,

Last month we celebrated Nmap's 26th birthday and today I'm happy to share
another big milestone: Our Npcap driver for capturing and sending raw
packets on Windows turned 10 this year! From humble beginnings as a
security and modernization patch for the discontinued WinPcap project,
Npcap has become an indispensable component for both Nmap and Wireshark.
And it's used by hundreds of other software products and...

Nmap 26th Birthday Announcement: Version 7.94 Gordon Fyodor Lyon (Sep 01)
Dear Nmap community,

Today is Nmap’s 26th birthday, which reminded me that I hadn’t yet
announced our Nmap 7.94 release from May. And it’s a great one! The biggest
improvement was the Zenmap and Ndiff upgrades from the obsolete Python 2
language to Python 3 on all platforms. Big thanks to Daniel Miller, Jakub
Kulík, Brian Quigley, Sam James, Eli Schwartz, Romain Leonard, Varunram
Ganesh, Pavel Zhukov, Carey Balboa, and Hasan Aliyev for...

Nmap 7.93 - 25th Anniversary Release! Gordon Fyodor Lyon (Sep 01)
Dear Nmap community,

Twenty five years ago today, I released the first version of Nmap in a
Phrack article named The Art of Port Scanning (https://nmap.org/p51-11.html).
I never thought I'd still be at it a quarter of a century later, but that's
because I also didn't anticipate such a wonderful community of users and
contributors spanning those decades. You've helped Nmap blossom from a
fairly simple port scanner to a...

Npcap Versions 1.70 and 1.71 improve Windows packet capturing performance, stability, security, and compatibility Gordon Fyodor Lyon (Sep 01)
Hello folks. While the Nmap Project has been quiet lately (this is my
first post of the year), I'm happy to share some great progress on both
Nmap and Npcap development. Starting with our Npcap Windows packet
capturing/sending library, I'm happy to report that we quietly released
Version 1.70 in June and then 1.71 on August 19. They include many key
improvements:

* Performance: A major overhaul of Packet.dll sped up routines that...

Not really different from prototyping on the Linux kernel or the

Not being a fanboy of CISA, I see that quite a lot of (positive) things

So I have a ton of thoughts on the CISA Secure by Design and Secure by

thought is: This is not a bad way to go about business as a government
agency in general. I think it's easy to ignore how fast the USG has changed

For those who like me are confused by release names, this is 24.04 LTS.

In other words, there's now precedent of allowing namespace creation
while disallowing use of capabilities in the namespace. I started
thinking of doing the same, but in a lightweight distro-neutral way, by
introducing a new sysctl.

Possible logic could be to set the maximum namespace nesting depth where
capabilities (or maybe specifically CAP_NET_ADMIN) still work....

FEC is amazing.

At higher data rates (100G and 400G) for long and ultra long haul
optical networks, SD-FEC (Soft Decision FEC) carries a higher overhead
penalty compared to HD-FEC (Hard Decision FEC), but the net OSNR gain
more than compensates for that, and makes it worth it to increase
transmission distance without compromising throughput.

Re: constant FEC errors juniper mpc10e 400g Saku Ytti (Apr 18)
The frames in FEC are idle frames between actual ethernet frames. So
you recall right, without FEC, you won't see this idle traffic.

It's very very good, because now you actually know before putting the
circuit in production, if the circuit works or not.

Lot of people have processes to ping from router-to-router for N time,
trying to determine circuit correctness before putting traffic on it,
which looks absolutely childish compared...

Re: constant FEC errors juniper mpc10e 400g Tom Beecher (Apr 18)
I'm being sloppy with my verbiage, it's just been a long time since
I thought about this in detail, sorry.

The MAC layer hands bits to the Media Independent Interface, which connects
the MAC to the PHY. The PHY converts the digital 1/0 into the form required
by the media transmission type; the 'what goes over the wire' L1 stuff. The
method of encoding will always add SOME number of bits as overhead. Ex,
64b/66b means that for...

I did not read the 100G Ethernet specs, but as far as I remember
FastEthernet (e.g. 100BASE-FX) uses 4B/5B coding on the line, borrowed
from FDDI. Octets of Ethernet frames are encoded to these 5-bit
codewords, and there are valid codewords for other stuff, like idle
symbols transmitted continuously between frames.

Gigabit Ethernet (1000BASE-X) uses 8B/10B code on the line (from Fibre
Channel). In GE there are also special (not frame octet) PCS...

Re: constant FEC errors juniper mpc10e 400g Aaron Gould (Apr 18)
Thanks.  What "all the ethernet control frame juju" might you be
referring to?  I don't recall Ethernet, in and of itself, just sending
stuff back and forth.  Does anyone know if this FEC stuff I see
concurring is actually contained in Ethernet Frames?  If so, please send
a link to show the ethernet frame structure as it pertains to this 400g
fec stuff.  If so, I'd really like to know the header format, etc.

-Aaron

Re: constant FEC errors juniper mpc10e 400g Tom Beecher (Apr 18)
FEC is occurring at the PHY , below the PCS.

Even if you're not sending any traffic, all the ethernet control frame juju
is still going back and forth, which FEC may have to correct.

I *think* (but not 100% sure) that for anything that by spec requires FEC,
there is a default RS-FEC type that will be used, which *may* be able to be
changed by the device. Could be fixed though, I honestly cannot remember.

Re: constant FEC errors juniper mpc10e 400g Aaron Gould (Apr 18)
Not to belabor this, but so interesting... I need a FEC-for-Dummies or FEC-for-IP/Ethernet-Engineers...

Shown below, my 400g interface with NO config at all... Interface has no traffic at all, no packets at all.... BUT,
lots of FEC hits. Interesting this FEC-thing. I'd love to have a fiber splitter and see if wireshark could read it
and show me what FEC looks like...but something tells me i would need a 400g sniffer to read it, lol...

Yes, correct.

Re: constant FEC errors juniper mpc10e 400g Tom Beecher (Apr 18)
Just for extra clarity off those KB, probably has nothing to do with
vendor interop as implied in at least one of those.

You will see some volume of FEC corrected on 400G FR4 with the same router
hardware and transceiver vendor on both ends, with a 3m patch. Short of
duct taping the transceivers together, not going to get much more optimal
than that.

lowmem is caseless which helps reduce memory. The exact match is checked during signature evaluation unless the content

ac_bnfa and ac_full are also caseless. The hyperscan MPSE is case sensitive. Your algorithm can be either.
